Business News: WEST CALDWELL, New Jersey — Police in West Caldwell say that someone has been harassing Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito at his former home there. In a statement released Sunday night, the West Caldwell Police Department said that officers have been called to a house that Alito used to own more than once.

"Erroneous information was circulating on the Internet that indicated that Justice Alito still resides in West Caldwell, and individuals have been sending harassing packages to the current resident," the West Caldwell Chief of Police said in a post on the department's Facebook page. "The information that Justice Alito still resides in West Caldwell is no longer true."

In 2007, after being confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Alito moved out of West Caldwell. "The current homeowner has no connection to Justice Alito and deserves to live in peace in their home without harassment, regardless of anyone's political beliefs," police stated. "All incidents will be looked into, and the people who did them will be charged and put on trial."

The harassment is said to have happened after the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 vote, overturned the 1972 Roe vs. Wade decision, which said that abortion was a constitutional right.

In May, when a draught of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision got out, the current family started getting hate mail and threats. Alito was one of the six judges who voted to change the rule when the decision was made public last week.

On Saturday, a social media post gave out Alito's West Caldwell address and told people to go there to bother the judge. This made the situation worse.

"It's meant for him, but he's not getting it. It's being sent to a family that has nothing to do with Judge Alito "Capriglione said. "I tried to see things from their point of view. If anonymous packages that were meant for someone else were sent to my house out of hate and anger, I wouldn't feel good about it."

"They are just a normal family who lives in town and works like the rest of us. It's not right that they have to go through all of this. They are being singled out, and that has to stop, "Capriglione said.

Capriglione wouldn't say what the threats were because local, state, county, and federal police were still looking into them. But it has also hurt businesses in the area. People have called to have food and other things delivered, and these deliveries have often been made without payment.
